Held at Sofia's Winter Sport Palace in Bulgaria from 4-11th December 2004.
This was the first European Curling Championships
for Ireland since official recognition by the ECF & WCF in 2003 and we entered both a womens & mens team.
Both teams were playing in the B league as this was their first appearance along with many other countries.
The event was well organised and included opening & closing ceromonies with medal presentations and traditional dancing,
as well as an enjoyable closing dinner final day.
The ICA National Mens team competing were
* Peter Wilson,
* Robin Gray,
* Peter JD Wilson,
* John Jo Kenny,
* John Furey.
Ireland's men topped their
section with eight wins and no defeats to qualify for the semifinals. They defeated the Czech
Republic 13-4 in the semifinal to ensure a place in the top flight A league next year.
They held recent world champions Finland for most of the final, but lost five shots to a magnificent
shot by Finnish skip, Markku Uusipaavalniemi, and never caught up, losing 9-2. Finland went on to
defeat Russia in a playoff for a place in the the World championships in British Columbia, and
Ireland lost their chance of a place in the Winter Olympics in Torino in 2006. However they
received a silver medal and promotion to the A league in 2005 - a fantastic acheivement.
The Irish men’s team included Dublin residents Peter Wilson, a former Scottish Junior
and World Junior champion, and Robin Gray (also a former World Junior and European medalist).
The other team members (John Jo Kenny, PJD Wilson, and John Furey) live and
curl in Scotland but qualify through their Irish fathers,
who were born in Belcoo, Derry and Donegal.
