Ireland 7 – Japan 6

The Irish Senior Men’s team, skipped by Peter Wilson, played Japan today in their final round robin game of the World Senior Curling Championships in Karlstad, Sweden.
This was a close fought match with the Japanese leading 4-2 at half time and then the Irish coming back with a 1 in the 5th end and a steal of a 3 in the sixth. Japan fought back in the next two ends resulting in an extra end won by Ireland.
Coach Gordon said: “Pete had to play a great shot to win this in an extra end.

1st End – lying 2, but Pete put his first draw through, the Japanese skip, Komoda, then wrecked on a guard, allowing Pete to draw to lie 3. Komoda, drawing against 3 but was third shot so Ireland steal 2. 2-0
2nd End – after an exchange of shots, and a couple of hit and rolls that rolled a little too far, Komoda drew for his 2. 2-2
3rd End – Pete had to draw against 2 behind the teeline with first stone, Komoda followed this with a draw to lie shot. Things were very tight around button by this time. Pete’s last draw had a wee bit too much running on it and Japan stole 1. 2-3
4th End – Japan were playing really well now and stole another 1.
5th End – Pete was left with an open draw to take a 1. 3-4.
6th End – Things were looking better for Ireland this time with stones in play, forcing Japan to come out and attack. Komoda was facing 3 with first stone. He hit and rolled out to leave 2 Irish stones sitting, and Pete drew to lie 3 – without last stone. Komoda, going against 3, was too heavy and Ireland stole a big three to take the score to 6-4.
7th End – Ireland on the defensive with hits, Pete to draw to empty house behind guard. The shot was sitting out a little forcing Japan to hit and stay. 6-5.
8th End – Plan was to keep this end tidy and open at the front 12 foot. With his first stone Pete drew to the tee lying open. Komoda played a good freeze onto Pete’s stone. Pete has to follow but the stone was a little underswept and the game went into the extra end tied at 6-6.
9th End – At the death Japan were lying shot and guarded, forcing Pete to draw the shot under pressure. Which he duly did. 7-6 win for Ireland..
A great shot to win the game.”
This puts Ireland through to the next stage – qualifier / quarter finals depending on rankings – well done.
No one loves the big occasion as much as Peter Wilson which makes him a great subject for the WCF’s excellent photographers covering the world seniors in Karlstad. Do they get earplugs along with their press pass I wonder?

Ireland 9 – France 3
The Irish Senior Men’s team, skipped by Peter Wilson, had a comfortable victory over France today in their penultimate round robin game in the World Senior Curling Championships in Karlstad, Sweden.
A three in the first end saw them on their way and a three in the seventh end saw the French call it a day.
Coach Gordon said: ” For this game Neil replace Ross at second
1st End – Good start to end, Pete and sweepers draw for 3.
2nd End -This turned into a hitting end. The opposition skip, Pascal Adam, missed his strikes and he was forced to draw against 2. He took his 1. 3-1
3rd End – Ireland were a wee bit unfortunate with hit and rolls in this end. Pete had a good hit for 2 to finish a good end. 5-1
4th End – Good end for Ireland leaving the French skip to draw against 4 for the single. 5-2
5th End – There was a bit of controversy in this end, with a front guard touched and replaced. Ireland were lying shot with Pete attempting a tap back for 2 but the stone just pulled up short and the boys had to settle for the 1. 6-2
6th End – Busy head that boiled down to Pascal Adam drawing with his last stone for a 2 and failing. 6.3
7th End – The French skip was left to hit against 3 with last stone, he picked out 1, but left Pete a straightforward draw for a 3. Handshakes with the score 9-3 to Ireland.
Boys played a lot better!”
Their final round robin game is tomorrow, Thursday 21th April, at 12 noon against Japan.

Ireland 2 – Sweden 8
The Irish Senior Men’s team, skipped by Peter Wilson, lost to Sweden this morning in their 6th round robin game. This takes them to the 4 wins and 2 losses in the World Senior Curling Championships in Karlstad, Sweden.
Match report:
1st end – after an exchange of shot stone, Pete hit and rolled behind a guard with his second shot but Swedish skip Wrana came round the guard to tap the shot stone back for a 2. 2nd end – This turned into hitting end that was blanked by Ireland 0-2.
3rd end – Once again, not too many stones in play during the entire end which concluded with Sweden forcing Ireland to take a single. 1-2
4th end – The front end, Tony and Ross, played well to build up the head as the Irish did not have last stone. PJ was unlucky when he just rolled out and Pete was facing 3 with his first stone, playing a cool hit to lie shot. Wrana hit and stuck to lie 3. Pete facing 3 again with his last stone. This time his hit through a port didn’t lie shot leaving Wrana the draw for a game changing 3.
5th end – Pete had to draw against 2 to take a 1.
6th end – Pete had to draw the shot against 3, but with last stone the Swedes nailed the take out for another 3. The Irish offered handshakes with the score 8-2 in Sweden’s favour.
Coach Gordon McIntyre said:
“The score doesn’t reflect on how the guys are playing, they are just not getting the rubs that’s required at this level.”
Their next game is tomorrow, Wednesday 20th April, at 12 noon against France.

The Irish team, skipped by Peter Wilson, won against Slovakia in the World Senior Curling Championships in Karlstad, Sweden.
Game 5. V Slovakia sheet B. 🔨 18/04/16.
1st End. Good draw by Pete into a busy 1. 1-0
2nd End. pretty straight forward with a steal 2. 3-0
3rd End. Exchange shots, O/S hit for a single 3-1 boys play well,
4th End. Good build up throughout the end, still had to make the shots.
Good team end to take a 4. 7-1
5th End. pretty even end O/S draw for 2. 7-3
6th End. Good build up by the team, dictating the end take a 4. 11-3.
Game finished.
The boys recovered well after last nights result against Canada.
Really good team performance.
Their next game is tomorrow, Tuesday 19th April, at 7:30 am against Sweden.

Ireland 1 Canada 10
The Irish team, skipped by Peter Wilson, suffered their first defeat against Canada, skipped by Randy Neufeld, in the World Senior Curling Championships in Karlstad, Sweden.
Game 4. V Canada. Sheet B. 17/04/16.
1st End. Different ice conditions, just a wee bit straighter allowing the hits. 0-0
2nd End. Taking stones into house making it a hitting game. Few mistakes allowing Canada to take the initiative. 0-3
3 rd End. Hit and roll game . 0-3
4th End. Too many mistakes in this end, forced Pete to take a single ( going against 4). 1-3
5th End. Not a good end O/S lifts a 3 to lay 4, Pete takes a double to lay 1 O/S T/O for 3. 1-6
6th End. Not our day . Team lose a four to go 1-10 down. Handshakes.
Their next game is tomorrow, Monday 18th April, at 12 noon against Slovakia.

Ireland 7 Israel 6
The Irish team, skipped by Peter Wilson, won their third game against Israel, skipped by Gary Gumprich, in the World Senior Curling Championships in Karlstad, Sweden.
The game was a close fought one, with the Irish boys taking the last end with a steal of two to win the match.
Their next game is tonight, Sunday 17th April, at 8pm against Canada.
